PARLIAMENT OF MALAYSIA, 29 August – ‘Hutan Kita’ is a reforestation programme to encourage the communities to plant rainforest trees and create the much needed green lungs in urban areas.
Former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi dan wife, Tun Jeanne planted a Pelawan Tree during the Hutan Kita @ Parlimen programme. Present also were the Chief Administrator of Parliament of Malaysia, Datuk Awang Alik Jeman and Secretary of The House of Representatives, Datuk Roosme Hamzah.
‘Hutan Kita’ is the brainchild of the former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and wife, Tun Jeanne Abdullah with the hope that it can reinforce a sense of belonging to the nature.
The ‘Hutan Kita’ programme started on 15 February 2009 at Bukit Kiara forest, Kuala Lumpur, and has now grown to include school, hospital and university compounds, parks, as well as mangrove forests.
Deputy President of The Senate, Hon. Senator Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Abd. Samad helped Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Tun Jeanne Abdullah to plant the Pelawan Tree during the Hutan Kita @ Parlimen programme.
In conjunction with the 59th National Day Celebration, the ‘Hutan Kita @ Parlimen’ plant a tree programme was held and officiated by Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Tun Jeanne Abdullah today at the Parliament of Malaysia.
Present also were the Deputy President of The Senate, Hon. Senator Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Abd. Samad; Chief Administrator of Parliament of Malaysia, Datuk Awang Alik Jeman; Secretary of The House of Representatives, Datuk Roosme Hamzah; Head of Management Division, Datuk Zamani Sulaiman and Chief Engineer, Ir. Ibtisham Lebai Saleh.
The tree planted is of the Pelawan species or by its scientific name, it’s called ‘Tristaniopsis Obovata’. The physical characteristics of the tree are its net-veined leaves, small yellow flowers and orange-colored trunk. Its roots can hold the soil of slopes to prevent landslides. This type of tree is commonly found in the forests of Malaysia and of other ASEAN countries.
Deputy President of The Senate, Hon. Senator Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Abd. Samad presented an orchid plant as a souvenir to Tun Jeanne Abdullah during the Hutan Kita @ Parlimen programme.
The programme which started at 10am ended around 11pm.
