THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CALLS FOR CLOSE

COOPERATION BETWEEN ASEAN COUNTRIES IN A MEETING WITH THE

PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND THE PRIME MINISTER OF
THE KINGDOM OF CAMBODIA

Phnom Penh, 22 July--His Excellency Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, President of the National Assembly of the Government of Cambodia has welcomed the Speaker of the House of Representatives, YB Tan Sri Dato' Johari bin Abdul’s call for ASEAN countries to focus on establishing strategic cooperation in the field of renewable energy and food security towards developing a prosperous and dynamic region.

A tête-à-tête between the two figures held recently in Phnom Penh was arranged in conjunction with the Speaker's Official Visit from July 20 - 24 at the invitation of the Cambodian Government as an international observer of the country’s National Elections on July 23.

In view of the rapid development of ASEAN countries and increasing global energy demand, the Speaker of the House of Representatives welcomes the partnership with Cambodia and other ASEAN countries in developing joint initiatives to expand the region's renewable energy ecosystem. These efforts include advancing knowledge transfer, capacity building and technical assistance. Additionally, the discussion explored avenues to increase scientific cooperation between ASEAN member countries to address the food security challenges faced by the region's communities.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the National Assembly of the Government of Cambodia both concurred on the imperative of strengthening concerted efforts between the Malaysian-Cambodian legislature

through the framework of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) vis-à-vis the exchange of knowledge and discussion of common interests including the development of ongoing legislative procedures.

Within the framework of the Speaker of the House of Representatives' working visit to the country, a meeting with His Excellency Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of Cambodia was also held to deliberate on a synergistic cooperation in renewable energy and the security of regional food supply.

Okhna Datuk Dr Othsman Hassan, Senior Minister in Charge of Special Mission

(Islamic Affairs) to discuss efforts to expand collaboration in the development of the Malaysian-Cambodian Muslim community. YB Tan Sri Dato' Johari bin Abdul is scheduled to meet the King of Cambodia, His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni in a special meeting in Phnom Penh this Sunday.
