Monday, 5 May 2014 – The Right Honourable Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysian Prime Minister has officiated the Malaysian Senators’ Council (MSC) on 3 May 2014, 8 p.m at the Banquet Hall, Parliament of Malaysia. Also present were the Prime Minister’s wife, Datin Sri Rosmah Mansor, H.E Senator Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang, President of the Senate, Hon. Senator Dato’ Abdul Rahim Abdul Rahman, President of Malaysian Senators’ Council, Dato’ Lamien Sawiyo, Chief Administrator of Malaysian Parliament, Datuk Roosme Hamzah, Secretary of the House of Representatives and Datuk Zamani Sulaiman, Secretary of the Senate.

The establishment of MSC was approved by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and its membership is open to all current and retired members of the Senate from Barisan Nasional. The council serves to empower the Senate as well as trying to change public’s perception of the impression that the Senate is only a rubber stamp. From time to time, various programmes will be arranged to enhance the public's knowledge about the duties of the Senate as one of the bodies involved in the drafting of the law.

The ceremony began with a welcome speech by the President of Malaysian Senators’ Council and graced with a special video clip about the history of the Senate and also the President of the Senate. Then a speech was given by the President of the Senate, H.E Senator Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang. The Prime Minister also delivered his speech and launched the Malaysian Senators’ Council logo symbolizing the inauguration.
During the ceremony, the Prime Minister also presented a replica of the Excellence Award Certificate to Dato’ Lamien Sawiyo, Chief Administrator of Malaysian Parliament on the success of Parliament of Malaysia Official Portal being given 5 star rating in Malaysia Government Portals and Websites Assessment 2013. Presentation of the certificate was also witnessed by the President of the Senate, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, CEO of Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and Malaysian Senators’ Council president. The ceremony was concluded with a group photo session of the MSC Committee Members with the Prime Minister and ended at 10.30 pm.
